Local area networking (LAN) is still a developing
technology for networking within a contained site,
usually the same
building. Most popular and widely used is the CAT5
flood cabling, enabling simple installation over false
ceiling
and trunking or cavity walling to sockets on the wall
- allowing simple patching with a flying lead to the
computer or other peripheral device for example network
printers.
This is being superceded by CAT6, a faster shielded
cabling technology to equal the performance of Gigabit
switches and network technologies, potentially up to
10 times faster than the 100Mbit CAT technology this
will ensure your client will get their data faster than
ever from your database server or allow fast movement
of big graphical images between workstations.
The LAN provides connection to other networks like
the internet or other sites and offices via WAN technologies
like VPN.
The LAN can even be extended to include Wireless Access
to laptops and other mobile devices to access data and
email just like their larger workstation brethren.
While Wireless access for a few laptops and mobile
devices APEX Computer Technology would not recommend
an entire Wireless LAN for data security and reliability
reasons.
Businesses need to operate reliably and quickly all
the time so copper or fibre would be the best LAN backbone
technology.
